Eradicating Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are almost certainly the most ghastly of household pests in most peoples' eyes. Cockroaches are bad enough, but they do not suck on you. Mosquitoes suck blood and are maddening, but we accept them more than bed bugs. But bed bugs suck your blood whilst you are asleep and then defecate in your bed as a thank you note.

New York’s Latest Invaders

The most recent invaders in New York are living proof that New York does go to sleep from time to time, because that is when these little nightmares come out to get you. It used to be rats that plagued New York, now it animals small enough to live on rats in their dozens. I am talking about Cimex lectularius, the bed bug that specializes in preying on people.

Looking At Bed Bugs Up Close

There are in fact quite a few types of bed bug, but the one that most people are referring to by 'bedbugs' is Cimex lectularius. Other species of bedbugs will extract human blood, but usually only if their favoured host, like poultry, is not around.

Did your parents or your grandparents use to say 'Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite' when they tucked you up in bed as a child? Bed Bugs And Public Health

Bed bugs have probably been plaguing people for ever, especially in warmer countries. In fact Aristotle wrote about them in 400 BC, but they were not common in the United Kingdom until after the Great Fire of London in 1666. People deduced that bed bugs lived in wood because the bed bug plagues only commenced after 1670; they supposed that the bed bugs that had come in with timber imported to reconstruct London.
