Spring

Spring

Fish ponds, together with koi ponds, come awake in the spring after a winter of semi-hibernation. As soon as the temperature goes above 10C (50F), your fish become more lively and your plants will start growing again. This means that it is a great opportunity to do some upkeep – a spring clean – because you will not shock or stress your inactive fish. If you try it any earlier, you will upset your fish in their slumber and any later and you may disturb breeding.

You ought to take out any leaves that has dropped into the pond and dredge for some of the algae. Then clean your pond filter and turn your filtration system back on, if you switched it off for the winter. Test the water for any chemical imbalance and treat any issues.

You ought to also add a broad spectrum medication for common fish ailments. Depending on the treatment you use, you may have to repeat this procedure a week later or when the temperature rises above a certain degree.

Summer

This is when your pond is in full swing. Your aquatic plants will be flourishing as will the algae. You must keep the algae under control, which means trawling, netting and scraping. You will have to clean your pond filter more often as well. Check it daily and keep it working at full power. The cleaner you can keep your koi pond now, the less work you will have to do afterward.

Aeration of the water is a major priority in the summer, because warm water is able to hold less oxygen than cold water. Therefore, you will have to keep your fountain working and your bubbler bubbling, if you have one.

If you do not have one, consider buying one. You fish and the blooming algae will be competing for the oxygen in the pond water. You can tell if the water is short of oxygen, because the fish will be gulping air at the surface.

The warm water will not only awaken your fish and your plants, it will also bring parasites to life, so keep a keen eye on your fish’ health and treat anything suspicious immediately. Look out for fish rubbing against the sides or each other – scratching themselves, in other words.

Feed frequently. Your fish will have eaten very little in the winter and now they have to replenish their fat for breeding and next winter.

Autumn

Autumn is changeable, but the first half may be like the summer and the second half more like winter. Continue to feed well. As the trees begin to lose their leaves, you must remove them from your pond water.

Drag the leaves off at least once a day or sling a net over the pond and skim for leaves weekly. If you have any pond plants that will not survive the winter, either take them indoors or throw them away; you do not want them rotting in your pond.

Winter

Life in your pond will slow down as winter progresses. You ought to feed less often, maybe only once a day until the temperature gets to 10C (50F) and then stop feeding – your fish will be in semi-hibernation at this point. Remove your filtration pumps and your fountain and switch all electrical gear off.

Put a pond heater in the water. This is a floating device that keeps a small surface area from freezing. If you allow all your pond to freeze over gases will build up, oxygen will vanish and your fish will die.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is at present concerned with the fish pond filter. If you are interested in a Solar Powered Pond Pump, please go to our web site now for a special deal.

One can find the jellyfish very commonly in the different seas and oceans all around the world with various biological names given to the different types of jellyfish. It is also found in fresh water especially when the water is deep. These types of jellyfish are rather colorless and quite small.

The habitat of the jellyfish will depend on the types of jellyfish. Some species are known to be present in warm waters and some others are found in the frigid and cold waters of the North Pacific Ocean. The Moon Jelly also known as the Aurelia Aurita is one of the regular types of jelly fish which is shaped like a saucer having a bell and is nearly transparent. Though the Moon Jelly is not known to be fatal it may sometimes have a deadly sting and this is the species that is generally seen in various aquariums.

The Physalia Phyalis is also one of the types of jelly fish and is known by the more popular name of Portuguese Man of War. Since it looks a little special, it may not actually belong to this species. Its body consists of four polyps and each one of these is used to perform a specific and separate function. Though the Physalia Physalis is not known to be very fatal, the sting could cause a lot of pain, fever and rashes.

Some of the types of jellyfish can be quite harmful and you should be aware of the deadly jellyfish facts, as many have been known to kill human beings with their poison. There is one species called the Winter Jelly fish or the Lion’s mane with the scientific name of Cyanea capillat, which is seen in frigid waters. It has a mild sting which is not very fatal but causes pain and also rashes as well as fever.

It is better to be aware of some deadly jellyfish facts, as there are quite a few of the dangerous types of jellyfish. Some claim that they are actually quite harmless and only attack humans if they are disturbed by them. There are nearly 1500 types of jellyfish that have been seen and identified by biologists. They are known for their unique features and peculiar behavior.

The color and shape of the jellyfish gives it the name of Blue bottle jellyfish. It is made of zooids and is not a single organism. The different zooids have various functions and together they act as on organism. A number of zooids form the tentacles for stinging and others form the feeding tentacles etcetera. It can be blue or even have a pink hue with a translucent body with a measurement of 3 cms to 15 cms. Its tentacles are about 15 cms up to even 10 meters in length.

Small fish and other marine creatures form the food of the blue bottle jellyfish. The jellyfish surrounds the prey with its tentacles and gives off a poison. After the prey gets paralyzed by it, the jellyfish eats it. The parts of the tentacles look like barbed hooks and are excellent for adhering to the prey.

If the tentacles of the blue bottle jellyfish attach to a human being, then it releases a poison by using nematocysts and by rubbing the affected part after the tentacle has been removed, more poison will be released. Washing the area without touching is the best remedy, after which a cold pack should be used for the pain.

The box jellyfish is a cube-shaped organism which is very poisonous. For safety’s sake, one must know some box jellyfish facts to save your life if it bites you. You can use vinegar on the sting as this will protect you from further venom, though the venom is not taken out. However, anti-venom must be used within 30 minutes of the sting, as it is fatal and can lead to death.

One of the important box jellyfish facts is that there is enough poison in its tentacle to kill an adult, paralyze a person, and put a stop to his heartbeat, depending on the sting location. Other intriguing box jellyfish facts include that it has a brain which is a meeting place of all the nerves, for information transfer. It also has visual abilities and can spot preys as well as other attackers. One of the important box jellyfish facts is that it is very dangerous and very few organisms, such as the green turtle, can consume it.

The scientific name for the upside down jelly fish is Cassiopeia xamachana and is often found in the waters of southern Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean sea and also in other waters of the tropics. It is mostly seen in shallow waters as also in mangrove swamps and lives on planktons as well as the food produced by the symbiotic algae that dwells within its body. In zoos, the upside down jelly fish is fed on marine invertebrates, and zoo planktons.

Other specific features of upside down jelly fish regarding the size is that they can reach a diameter of 12 to 14 inches. Their reproduction is done in sexual manner in one part of their life and asexually in another part. They have a glowing appearance in the dark and contain symbiotic golden algae. On the outside, they have lacy frilly ruffles.

The upside down jelly fish has many mini mouths ranging up to forty and the major part of their body is made of water which forms up to 95 percent, with the rest consisting of salt and protein matter. It is usually seen at the water bottom and could be taken for a sea anemone. It stings very rarely and even this is not very poisonous. Oxygen is produced by the symbiotic algae within its body and this enables it to survive even in water with less oxygen in it.

The white spotted jelly fish invasive species mainly feeds on snail species and is usually found in southwestern Pacific. The largest size to be recorded is 28 inches, though their average size is 17 to 19 inches bell size. They are not very venomous and hence not a threat to humans. Its sting is quite mild and can be cured with vinegar or salt water.

The white spotted jelly fish invasive species is, however, a threat to the marine species and is called an invasive species, as it eats up the larvae and eggs of important fish species and also the planktons. This fish consumes about 13,200 gallons of sea water and absorbs the planktons depriving the other inhabitant species of their food. This invasive species is a real threat to various types of shrimps.

Most living organisms have a specific digestive organ which is its digestive system, but this cannot be said for the jelly fish which does not have any special organ for digestion. It has a gastro dermal lining present in the gastro vascular cavity and helps to digest the nutrients that it takes in. Jelly fish are usually called as blooms or swarms when found in groups and they usually feed on smaller organisms in the underwater and also on planktons. So if you are asking what does jellyfish eat, then it will suffice to say that they feed on smaller fish and also on other smaller organisms found in the water.

The jelly fish is carnivorous in nature and hence they consume more of other fish but it is not the only diet of the jelly fish.

On the western and eastern coasts of North America in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, is to be found the sea nettle jelly fish or Chrysaora. It generally has its body covered in white dots and reddish-brown stripes and seems saucer-shaped. Its four oral arms are present on the underside of the body and all along the outer edge it has tentacles a few feet long.

These tentacles have nematocysts all along it which are rather like capsules and are barbed throughout. It contains toxins that can paralyze the victim. When the sea nettle touches anything hard, the pressure on the tentacles activates the nematocysts and the powerful venom gets injected into the foreign body. This is how the sea nettle jellyfish gets its prey for food.

It uses this mechanism when it meets a large predator and can paralyze it, whereas a smaller animal can get killed. The effect of its sting on humans can be moderate to severe. The sting can cause a rash which is quite painful with a burning sensation. Sometimes an allergic reaction can be caused which can become serious. But the sea nettle jellyfish don’t deliberately attack human beings. It is just a part of their defensive mechanism and one should take care not to disturb the known habitats of sea nettle jellyfish.

Many people love to have exotic pets and may not be satisfied with their goldfish. Many people now want to buy jellyfish to keep in their fish tank. Of course, you can always collect the jellyfish in oceans but you can even buy them from online pet stores which have plenty of stock.

At online stores, there are many kinds of jellyfish available and you can also select appropriate accessories for the fish tank once you buy jelly fish. You can even select different types of aquariums, but before you buy jellyfish, you must ensure the perfect environment that suits your pet.

The unique form of jelly fish called the blue bottle jelly fish is seen in the waters of the coastal Australia and New Zealand. This fish can be quite fatal to humans at times and goes by another name ‘Portuguese-man-o-war’ as it is similar in appearance to a Portuguese battle ship with its sail. As the name signifies, it is blue in color and the various parts of its body are capable of performing different functions.

The blue bottle jelly fish is not just a single animal but is made of many groups of zooids. One part forms the stinging tentacles while another part consists of the feeding tentacles. All the various zooids collect together to form this special form of jelly fish. The blue bottle jelly fish uses its tentacles to catch fish and other smaller organisms that live under water for its food.

This unique jelly fish can be quite a danger to man. They consider humans a danger and usually attack only for protecting themselves. However, the sting is extremely painful and many times fatal too. There might be cases of severe allergy too and the venom that is released from its tentacles has the potency of causing death. The venom can be released even hours after the tentacles are removed from the body. The best form of protection from a sting is to pour cold water over the affected area and wash it.

The dried blue bottle jelly fish is known as goi sua and this forms part of the Vietnamese food. They usually cook the goi sua along with shallots, ham, fish, peanuts, shrimp, cucumber, sauce, coriander, salt and pepper and this dish is held to be very nutritious. Many people across the world like to eat this dish made from goi sua.

For non-vegetarians, the above form of goi sua can be made whereas a veggie can have it along with cabbage and carrots. Nutrients and proteins are absorbed in this food as it is a mix of both plant eating animals and marine ones.
